The Reality of Food Insecurity Among College Students

Food insecurity is a crucial issue affecting one in three college students, with detrimental impacts on their ability to complete their college education. Many students are struggling to meet their basic needs, which cost them their academic success and overall well-being.

Despite resources like local food pantries and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), many students are unaware of how to access these services, and those who do usually feel embarrassed. This stigma prevents students from seeking the help they need, resulting in worsened hardships and, in some cases, causing them to drop out of college. Transportation to resources and education of possible food programs are also a barrier to accessing help.

Key Aspects

  • General: Nearly one-third (29%) of college students have missed a meal at least once a week since the beginning of 2020.

  • Food Pantries: More than half (52%) of students sometimes use off-campus food banks, with 30% relying on them at least once a month.

  • Parents: Nearly half (49%) of student parents have experienced food insecurity, reflecting the additional burdens faced by those balancing education with parenting.

  • Academics: 34% of students know someone who has dropped out of college due to difficulties affording food.
